If a bed or vegetable garden has not yet been planted, try some preemptive weed control. Cover the area with black plastic, and weigh down the edges with rocks or bricks. Leave the plastic in place as long as you can. Weeds are among the first plants to sprout in spring, and this suffocates many of them early on.
